As local governments across California quietly place new revenue measures on the ballot, Reform California Chairman and State Assemblymember Carl DeMaio is warning voters: a wave of hidden tax hikes is being pushed at the local level—and most voters don’t even realize it.
“This isn’t transparency—it’s deception,” DeMaio said. “Politicians are hiding tax hikes behind vague wording so voters don’t realize what they’re approving.”
Reform California reports that many of these measures are framed as funding for “public safety,” “infrastructure,” or “community investment,” while failing to clearly disclose the true cost to taxpayers. Some proposals also bundle tax increases with popular programs to make them harder to oppose.
“This is how they get tax hikes passed—confuse the voter and hide the price tag,” DeMaio said.
With ballots set to go out, Reform California is urging voters to look beyond the title and read the fine print before casting their vote.
