California Democrats just made a massive political mistake by killing several popular, common-sense bills in the State Legislature. And it could cost them in 2026 — if Republicans play their cards right and organize effectively against them.
Carl DeMaio, chairman of Reform California and a State Assemblymember, says that state Democrats have gone so far to the Left that they’ve opened a door for reform-minded groups.
“California Democrats have been mismanaging our state for years, but now it’s like they’re actively trying to burn it down with their insane and extremist ideas — and the public is starting to take notice,” said DeMaio. “We can absolutely highlight their terrible policies and rally the public for change in the 2026 election — we’re already seeing it working with public outcry driving the direction of AB 379.”
AB 379, a widely supported bill that would make it a felony to purchase 16- and 17-year-old minors for sex, was initially gutted by California Democrats. But a massive public backlash campaign organized by DeMaio, Reform California, fellow Assembly Republicans, and the California Republican Party caused the Assembly to reverse course and support the bill.
“But gutting AB 379 wasn’t a one-off,” said DeMaio. “For months, we’ve introduced bold, common-sense reforms backed by more than 70% of the public — and Democrats in Sacramento have repeatedly voted to kill every single one of them.”
Reform California has compiled a shocking list of 10 wildly popular bills that California Democrats have killed:
The 10 Common-Sense Bills CA Democrats Just Killed
- Combat Child Trafficking (AB 379)
- Insurance Rate Relief (AB 567)
- Cancel High-Speed Rail Boondoggle (AB 100 Amendment)
- End Free Healthcare for Illegal Immigrants (AB 100 Amendment)
- Remove Criminal Squatters (AB 897)
- End Reckless Release of Criminals (AB 22)
- Stop Bans on Gas Appliances & Cars (AB 1238)
- Provide Parents with Education Choice (AB 19)
- End Politicians’ Perks and Insider Trading (AB 26)
- Require Voter ID (AB 25)
“These are bills with overwhelming public support — bills that could actually fix what’s broken in our state,” DeMaio says. “Democrats didn’t just vote no — they killed these reforms in committee to avoid being held accountable. But we got them on record, and now we’re going to make them regret it.”
Since the vote on the AB 379 child trafficking bill, Reform California has been inundated with messages from outraged citizens — including nearly a dozen potential candidates now stepping up to run for office against vulnerable Democrats.
“This egregious vote could cost Democrats their supermajority,” said DeMaio. He also indicated that the other recently-killed bills have only added to the outrage. “We’ve been recruiting candidates for months, and now the floodgates have opened. The people are ready to fight back.”
Reform California plans to publish and promote a full list of candidate recruits in the coming weeks, but DeMaio warns that resources are the limiting factor.
“We have the momentum, we have the outrage, and we have the winning issues,” DeMaio said. “Now we need the resources to help our candidates launch campaigns and educate voters in target districts.”
Reform California is asking all concerned citizens to join the fight to end the Democrat supermajority and restore accountability in Sacramento.
“This is our moment,” said DeMaio. “Let’s use it. Let’s fight back — and let’s take back our state.”
