As Los Angeles descends into chaos with cars set ablaze, rocks hurled at police, and violent riots breaking out across the city over ICE’s targeting of violent criminal illegal aliens, Assemblyman Carl DeMaio is exposing the shocking truth: California state tax dollars are being used to fund the very groups behind the violence — and Governor Gavin Newsom and Democrat politicians are to blame.
“This is state-sponsored anarchy,” says DeMaio, who held a press conference this week with Assembly Republicans revealing financial records and direct evidence that more than a dozen left-wing organizations involved in inciting the LA riots received millions in taxpayer funding through Gavin Newsom’s state budget.
One group — the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights Los Angeles (CHIRLA) — received over $45 million in state and local taxpayer dollars just last year. CHIRLA and other organizations have been linked to organizing the protests that turned violent and promoting anti-police rhetoric on social media, including posts that directed agitators toward Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) locations through so-called “anti-ICE hotlines.”
“In this week’s state budget, Gavin Newsom is cutting law enforcement funding while fully funding the same far-left groups that are fueling these riots and putting officers’ lives at risk,” said DeMaio.
“We’re not talking about a few grants — we’re talking about $100–150 million in taxpayer funds going to radical groups actively undermining law enforcement and public safety,” he added.
During the press conference, DeMaio called on Newsom and Democrat legislators to immediately zero out all funding for these organizations and instead redirect the funds to public safety and fully implementing Prop 36, which voters approved to crack down on crime.
“Budgets reflect your values,” DeMaio said. “And what we’re seeing right now is that Gavin Newsom and California Democrats value supporting violent protest groups over protecting working families and first responders.”
DeMaio’s watchdog initiative, DOGE California (Department of Government Efficiency), has been working around the clock to follow the money and expose the truth behind the funding of the riots.
“In the past 72 hours alone, our DOGE California team has uncovered a paper trail linking taxpayer dollars to multiple organizations that helped organize, incite, or enable the riots,” DeMaio confirmed. “The liberal media refuses to investigate, so we’re doing the job they won’t.”
DOGE California has found that:
Despite claims from Governor Newsom and LA Mayor Karen Bass that the protests are “mostly peaceful,” law enforcement is telling a very different story. Even Democrat-appointed LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell has admitted that “This violence that I’ve seen is disgusting” and that his forces “are overwhelmed.”
President Trump has since federalized the National Guard and deployed U.S. Marines to restore order — while California Democrats continue to try to shift the blame and shamefully accuse Trump of inciting the unrest.
“It’s not Trump who funded the riots — it’s Gavin Newsom,” said DeMaio. “And now the same politicians who are responsible for this destruction want to deflect and distract instead of taking responsibility.”
Reform California is urging voters to join the movement to defund these radical groups, hold Gavin Newsom and the Democrats accountable, and fully fund law enforcement and public safety in the upcoming state budget.
“Governor Newsom, stop funding violence. Stop inciting your militant base. Do your job,” DeMaio demanded. “The voters already told you their priority in November: fully fund Prop 36 and restore law and order.”
“This isn’t just a riot — it’s a taxpayer-funded rebellion against law and order,” DeMaio continued. “And we’re going to make sure every Californian knows who’s behind it.”
