Reform California Chairman and State Assemblymember Carl DeMaio announced today the launch of a statewide grassroots campaign to block a new California Mileage Tax, warning that Sacramento politicians are preparing yet another massive tax hike on working families.
“California’s greedy politicians have already imposed the highest gas tax and car tax in the nation,” DeMaio said. “Now they want to charge us per mile we drive just to squeeze even more money out of taxpayers.”
What Is the Mileage Tax?
The proposed California Mileage Tax would require the government to track every driver’s mileage and charge motorists six to nine cents per mile driven.
That translates to the equivalent of a gas tax spike of between $0.87 and $1.15 per gallon—on top of existing gas and car taxes that are already the highest in America.
The Real Cost to California Families
For the typical California driver traveling about 15,000 miles per year, the Mileage Tax would mean:
- $900 to $1,200 in new taxes every year
- Paying more just to drive on poorly maintained freeways
- Being taxed again for roads already paid for with gas and sales taxes
When combined with existing gas and car taxes, a two-car family could end up paying more than $4,200 per year just for the privilege of driving in California—not including the cost of the vehicles themselves.
“That’s not a transportation policy,” DeMaio said. “That’s a punishment for working, commuting, and living your life.”
An Invasion of Privacy
The Mileage Tax would also create a new government tracking system for drivers, with bureaucrats still debating how it would be enforced.
Proposed tracking methods include:
- Transponders installed in vehicles
- Mandatory tracking apps on drivers’ cell phones
- Annual odometer inspections
“No matter how they package it, this is government surveillance tied directly to a tax,” DeMaio said. “It should alarm every Californian.”
Reform California Plan to Stop the Mileage Tax
Reform California is mobilizing supporters statewide to make the Mileage Tax a defining issue in upcoming elections, exposing the true cost of the proposal and holding politicians accountable for yet another reckless tax hike.
“This tax has nothing to do with fixing roads,” DeMaio said. “Politicians have already raided transportation funds. Now they want to blame drivers for their own mismanagement.”
Reform California is calling on Californians to take immediate action by signing then sharing the petition with friends, family, and neighbors across the state.
“We don’t need new taxes or new tracking schemes,” DeMaio said. “We need accountability, honest budgeting, and politicians who stop treating drivers like an ATM.”
