As Californians struggle with soaring prices, crime, and a collapsing quality of life, Sacramento politicians have sent another wave of terrible bills to Governor Gavin Newsom’s desk. Carl DeMaio is warning that if signed, these proposals will make life even harder for hardworking Californians—and he’s calling on every voter to demand a veto.
“Newsom and Sacramento Democrats have lost their minds—and they’re hellbent on driving California into the ground,” warns DeMaio.
“These bills are a direct attack on Californians—radical, corrupt, and written by politicians who have no clue what real people are going through,” says DeMaio. “I’m calling on every Californian to Contact the Governor and demand a veto before these become law.”
Here’s the list of the Top Ten Worst Bills on the Governor’s Desk:
- AB 1207—The Tax-and-Spend Increase
AB 1207 extends California's Cap-and Trade Program all the way to 2046, keeping emissions permits in place and even instructing regulators to factor in the “full social cost” of emissions when setting prices. While supporters claim this is about climate change, the practical effect is clear: higher utility and fuel prices for years to come.
“AB 1207 is nothing but a massive hidden tax on working families,” warns DeMaio. “Newsom knows this will send energy bills throught the roof—and he doesn’t care. Veto this or admit you’re declaring economic war on Californians.”
- SB 301—The Pension Handcuffs Bill
SB 301 amends the County Employees Retirement Law of 1937 (CERL) to prohibit counties or districts from excluding any group or classification of employees from membership in the pension systems. In other, local governments would lose flexibility to limit who receives pension benefits under CERL.
“SB 301 is financial suicide,” DeMaio warns. This bill literally handcuffs taxpayers to gold-plated pensions forever. Newsom signing this is the same as bankrupting California on purpose.”
- AB 596—Rigging the Ballot Labels
Forces ballot labels to only include top 3 supporters of an initiative—deliberately hiding who is funding the opposition to trick voters.
“This is election fraud by design,” warns DeMaio. “They’re manipulating ballots to fool voters. If Newsom signs this, he’s complicit in rigging our elections.”
- SB 274—Destroying Law Enforcement Tools
Forces police to delete license plate reader data after just 60 days, making it harder to solve crimes.
“This bill is a gift to criminals and a slap in the face to victims,” says DeMaio. “Newsom is dismantling law enforcement one bill at a time.”
- SB 79—State Takeover of Local Housing
Forces cities to approve high-density housing near transit regardless of local zoning or community plans.
“Sacramento is bulldozing your communities and stripping local control. SB 79 is a disaster for neighborhoods,” warns DeMaio. “This is a developer giveaway that shoves dense housing into your community whether you want it or not.”
- AB 495—The ‘Let Strangers Seize Children’ Bill
Allows strangers to claim guardianship simply by signing a form and allows courts to impose joint guardianship in cases of immigration enforcement.
“This bill is crazy,” DeMaio says. “It tears children away from parents and hands them to strangers with zero safeguards. No sane person should support this.”
- SB 155—The State-Run Media Bill
Allows the Governor to funnel taxpayer money to chosen media outlets across California.
“This is government propaganda—plain and simple,” warns DeMaio. “Newsom wants to buy off the press with your money so they’s cover up hi failures.”
- SB 596—Crushing Hospitals and Fines
Strengthens enforcement of nurse-to-patient ration requirements: requiring hospitals to keep on-call pools, treating each violation separately, and tightening timelines for investigation. Rural hospitals may especially suffer.
“This bill will drive hospitals—especially rural hospitals—out of business,” says DeMaio.
- AB 692—Banning Employee Incentives
Prohibits benefits like tuition assistance or signing bonuses if they are contingent on staying in the job.
“This is the dumbest, most anti-worker bill yet,” says DeMaio. “They’re literally outlawing perks that help workers advance. Only in California.”
- AB 1071—Giving Criminals New Loopholes
Allows felons to use the Racial Justice Act to overturn sentences based on statistical disparities, regardless of individual facts.
“This bill is a get-out-of-jail free card for violent criminals,” warns DeMaio. “It will put predators back on the streets and make California even more dangerous.”
DeMaio says these bills prove once again that Sacramento politicians care more about unions, criminals, and fridge activists than hardworking Californians. That’s why DeMaio is mobilizing to stop them—and he’s urging every Californian to join the fight today.
Tell Governor Newsom: VETO These Bills!
