Gavin Newsom and CA politicians have called a costly and unnecessary special election this November 4 as they try to deceive voters into approving Prop 50 – an initiative that would END FAIR ELECTIONS in California!
Prop 50 would nullify a citizens’ initiative that requires an independent redistricting commission to draw election districts in a strictly non-partisan manner.
Prop 50 takes the redistricting power away from citizens and gives that power back to the politicians so they can manipulate the lines of election districts for their own personal political benefit.
As proof of how corrupt Newsom and CA politicians are on this issue, Prop 50 has a FALSE TITLE – deceptively worded to suggest to voters that a YES vote would keep the independent citizens redistricting commission when in fact a YES vote eliminates the citizens from the process and hands the power back to the politicians. Lying on the ballot is shameful – and we MUST warn voters.
While Newsom and CA Democrats say Prop 50 is a response to Trump and Texas redistricting, the truth is CA politicians have always opposed the independent citizens redistricting commission that was imposed on them in 2010. Now they are using hatred of Trump as the window dressing to fool voters into grabbing the power back from the people so politicians get to manipulate their lines again.

On November 4 – Vote NO on Prop 50!
✘ 1. Ends Independent Maps
Hands the power back to politicians to rig the system by drawing districts safe for their cronies and guaranteeing their reelection. That’s not democracy — that’s entrenchment.
✘ 2. Silences Voters
Eliminates public input and transparency by taking redistricting out of the public square, where more than 35,000 Californians participated in the last redistricting cycle, and turns it over to politicians behind closed doors in the Capitol.
✘ 3. Undermines Democracy
Opens the door to gerrymandering, which disproportionately harms communities of color, reduces competitive elections, and erodes accountability.
✘ 4. Hurts Our Communities
Strips constitutional protections that currently ensure communities are kept whole and that maps are not drawn to favor political parties or incumbents.
✘ 5. Sets a Dangerous Precedent
Even “temporarily” killing off a piece of democracy sets a dangerous precedent that could be used by future politicians to undermine constitutional safeguards.
✘ 6. Costly, Wasteful and Dangerous
Requires a special election, which will cost taxpayers more than $250 million — even as California faces painful budget cuts to health care, education, housing, and other critical services.

politicians are illegally putting this measure on the ballot. The state constitution expressly prohibits the politicians from manipulating election maps for their own personal and political benefit. By even putting a misleading measure on the ballot, the politicians are violating their oath to defend the state constitution.
Answer to “What about Texas?”
Gerrymandering districts by politicians is NEVER ok – whether here, in Texas, or anywhere else. We believe Texas and all states should adopt California’s citizens’ independent redistricting model. But Newsom is using Texas as window dressing to give politicians what they always wanted – control of redistricting so they can gerrymander and that will end fair elections in our state.
