Key Talking Points for CA Voter ID Initiative

“OUR GOAL: TO RESTORE TRUST AND CONFIDENCE”

A healthy democracy requires the highest levels of public trust and confidence in how our elections are conducted. Unfortunately, California’s documented weak election practices and conspiracy theories have led to polls showing the lowest level of trust and confidence in our elections in decades. Voter ID is seen as a common-sense reform to restore trust and confidence among Republicans and Democrats alike.

“GOOD GOVERNMENT REFORMS WITH BIPARTISAN SUPPORT”
  • Polling shows 68% of California voters support Voter ID – including a MAJORITY of Democrats and a Super-Majority of Independents.  Almost half the signatures to put the measure on the ballot came from Democrats and Independents. That’s because the measure is not partisan – it simply requires that California conduct its elections using best practices that are used in red and blue states alike.
  • Require better maintenance of voter rolls and audits. Right now, poor voter list management in California results in 2 million ballots being sent out to people who no longer live here.
  • Verify citizenship of those registering to vote. Currently, this is not being done – people register to vote by simply promising they are a citizen. We require that to be double checked.
  • Free Voter ID cards to all eligible voters. Any voter can request a Voter ID from their county registrar free of charge.
Verify the identity of people casting ballots. Signature reviews aren’t being done properly, so going to a Voter ID method makes it easier to verify identity.
“THIS IS NOT THE SAVE ACT – WE TOOK A SIMPLER APPROACH”

The SAVE Act imposes many mandates on voters and states alike. The CA Voter ID Initiative imposes no burdens on voters – and instead holds state and local government election officials accountable to do their jobs using best practices from red and blue states.

“NO ADDITIONAL BURDENS ON VOTERS”

The measure requires NO extraordinary documents from voters – just a simple government ID.  The measure provides a FREE VOTER CARD for any voter who requests one.  Under this initiative, no voter will be required to show a birth certificate, marriage license, etc.  The citizenship verification is all done by the government using existing government data systems.

“WILL RESULT IN MORE PARTICIPATION – NOT LESS”

The measure does not suppress voting – in fact it will increase voter participation.  States that have enacted Voter ID laws have seen a significant increase in voting – including among minorities and women. Many voters do not vote if they do not have trust and confidence in the integrity of the process. Many other voters do not vote by mail because they cannot remember how their signature looked 20 years ago when they first registered.  In the last election, 300,000 ballots were rejected due to signature mismatches – and 100,000 ballots were completely discarded Voter ID eliminates these problems.
