As Californians flee the state in record numbers, California Democrat politicians show no remorse as they double down on their terrible policies with yet another wave of reckless bills. Carl DeMaio is warning voters about the damage these proposals would cause—and is inviting any Californian outraged by these bills to join the fight to restore sanity.
“Governor Gavin Newsom and California Democrat legislators are completely unhinged from reality as they continue to advance fatally flawed policies that hurt Californians,” warns DeMaio.
“These bills are dangerous, corrupt, and flat-out crazy—and they show exactly how out of touch Sacramento politicians have become,” says DeMaio. “I’m calling on every Californian to contact their legislators and demand a NO vote.”
Here’s the list of the Top Ten Worst Bills Awaiting Passage:
1. AB 495 The ‘Let Strangers Seize Children’ Bill
This outrageous measure lets strangers claim guardianship of a child simply by signing a form—with no investigation allowed. They can then make medical, educational, and mental health decisions without parental consent. The bill even allows courts to impose joint guardianships if a parent faces immigration enforcement and requires schools to distribute immigration guides to families.
“This bill is crazy,” DeMaio says flatly. “AB 495 puts child welfare at risk by letting strangers swoop in and take authority away from parents. It’s dangerous and must be stopped.”
2. AB 84 The Charter School Kill Bill
Guts California’s charter schools, especially online and flexible models. Teachers’ unions hate charters because they outperform government schools—so Sacramento is trying to shut them down.
“Charter schools deliver results and give parents choice—that's why the education bureaucracy wants to destroy them,” DeMaio warns. “This bill would end innovation in education.”
3. AB 1037 Legalizing Drug Paraphernalia and Weakening Rehab
Bans treatment centers from requiring sobriety before care, decriminalizes needs and drug-checking tools, and redefines rehab programs around “harm reduction” rather than reducing illegal drug use.
“This bill enables addiction instead of fighting it,” DeMaio warns. “It’s insanity—and it will cost lives.”
4. AB 695 Tuition Perks for Deported Students
Provides special in-state tuition for undocumented students who are deported, allowing them to keep taking classes online—while legal California students continue to pay sky-high tuition. The bill is nothing more than another illegal immigrant giveaway. By prioritizing benefits for deported individuals, this bill sends the dangerous message that California will continue to incentivize and reward illegal immigration—at taxpayer expense.
“Instead of fixing the cost of college for everyone, this bill rewards people who violated our immigration laws,” DeMaio warns. “AB 695 is an insult to hardworking California families who follow the rules, pay the taxes, and still can’t afford college for their kids.”
5. SB 437 Reparations Bureaucracy Bill
Creates a permanent taxpayer-funded reparations bureaucracy at CSU to study how to distribute payments. Estimated cost: $6 million to start—and that’s just for the paperwork.
“Sacramento politicians want to waste millions of dollars we don’t have on studies for an unconstitutional reparations scheme,” DeMaio says. “It’s insane.”
6. AB 57 Race Based Housing Giveaway
Reserves 10% of state home buying assistance exclusively for descendants of slaves. That means housing subsidies based on skin color.
“This is unconstitutional and absurd,” DeMaio argues. “Instead of fixing housing costs for everyone, Sacramento is handing out taxpayer-funded benefits based on race.”
7. SB 627 The Police Doxxing Bill
SB 627 makes it illegal for police officers to wear masks on duty—unless they’re undercover or on a SWAT team. The real goal? Expose and intimidate cops.
“This bill is a gift to anti-police agitators who want to harass and target officers,” DeMaio warns. “It’s shameful, dangerous, and will put lives at risk.”
8. SB 79 State Takeover of Local Housing
SB 79 forces cities to allow high-density housing projects near bus stops, train stations, and other public transit—even if those projects conflict with local zoning laws or community plans. Local officials and residents would lose the ability to control the character of their own neighborhoods.
“Sacramento politicians want to bulldoze over communities and strip away local control,” DeMaio warns. “SB 79 is a developer giveaway that will jam dense housing into neighborhoods whether residents want it or not.”
9. SB 301 The Pension Handcuffs Bill
This bill would ban local governments from reforming pension benefits for new hires. In plain English: taxpayers are stuck with gold-plated pensions forever, with no chance to rein them in.
“SB 301 literally handcuffs taxpayers to unsustainable pension costs—the very same pensions that are bankrupting clarifies across California,” blasts DeMaio. “This bill strips away local control and guarantees financial collapse.”
10. AB 361 Rigging School Construction Contracts
This bill forces school districts to favor union-only contracts for projects over $1 million. Forget lowest cost or best value—unions get the payoff. This shuts out non-union contractors and guarantees higher costs.
“This is textbook corruption: politicians rewarding campaign contributors with guaranteed contracts,” says DeMaio.
AB 339 Union Veto Power Over Contracts
Gives unions veto power over government contracts by forcing 60-day advance notice. A blatant payoff that delays projects, drives up costs, and blocks competition.
DeMaio says that these bills prove once again that Sacramento politicians care more about unions, criminals, and fringe activists than about hardworking Californians. That's why DeMaio and Reform California are working to recruit, train, and elect new politicians who will actually fight for common-sense change. You can join the campaign below.
